Throughout our hectic student lives, we should always remain aware of what is happening around us. In this column, I find some of the most significant events happening in the world around us and provide you with a small blurb and nitty-gritty details. Here are some of the major events that have been taking place:
Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting arrested by police
Police in Altoona, Pennsylvania apprehended a suspect inside a McDonalds in the Manhattan killing of former UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thomspon after a customer provided a tip to the authorities. Luigi Nicholas Mangione, a 26-year-old son from a prominent Maryland real estate family, was arrested and arraigned on five counts and is being held without bail in Pennsylvania. The NYPD believes the shooter used a ghost gun, or a 3D-printed gun without a traceable serial number, to kill Thomspon. After searching through Mangione’s bag at the time of arrest, Altoona police found a similar gun, a device used as a silencer and a manifesto criticizing corporate America and the private healthcare system. Earlier, NYPD officers recovered shell casings from the murder scene with the words “Deny”, “Defend”, “Depose”, referencing the common tactic healthcare companies like UnitedHealthcare use to deny insurance claims.
