The sports world is one that is always changing. From big trades to hot streaks to injuries, the world of sports is known for its unpredictability. This column is meant to recap some key stories in that world. This calendar year has seen a lot of New York teams go far in the playoffs. The Knicks made it to the National Basketball Association Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Mets made it to the National League Championship Series, and the Yankees made it all the way to the World Series.
In this Major League Soccer season, both the New York Red Bulls and New York City Football Club, better known as NYCFC, have the opportunity to make it to the MLS Cup Eastern Conference finals. The only team standing in the way of that goal are each other. After finishing right next to each other in the Eastern Conference, both teams were set to compete in the playoffs. The Red Bulls, who finished seventh, would face the second place Columbus Crew, while the sixth place NYCFC would face the third place FC Cincinnati. Both series would be taken to the third and final game of the series, both going to penalties, and both New York teams coming out on top.
Now, heading into the biggest Hudson River Derby of all time, NYCFC will seemingly be handicapped, as nine players were selected to play for their country just days before the start of the conference semifinals, compared to just one for the Red Bulls. So, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for fatigue, or possible injury, to handicap an already interesting series. The first game of the series, which sees the NYCFC host the Red Bulls, takes place on Nov. 23 at 5:30 p.m., and is being streamed on Apple TV through the MLS Season Pass.
