Freshman year of college is extremely wild. It’s a surreal experience because it truly makes you a stronger and an independent individual. Now on your own, in a new environment and with new people. There are many tips I would give to incoming freshmen on how to survive your first semester in college. As it comes to schoolwork, yes it could be overwhelming and there is a lot coming at you. Do not procrastinate. Always do the work early and never let it catch you late. Therefore, it’s stress free. Trust me, it’ll make your life as a student so beneficial.
There are a lot of procrastinating students in college, especially as freshmen, and it can really affect your grades. Don’t be the student that falls behind on their work, it’s not a good place to be in.
Secondly, free time in college can also be overwhelming and full of fear. Probably asking themselves, what do I do now? Who can I do something with?
Is it normal to be alone? We all have had those questions, and it will be completely fine. If you’re alone, that’s a positive. It shows that you are an independent person. Personally, my advice would be to do anything and everything. Get out of your comfort zone. Say yes to everything, and spend as little time in your dorm as possible. Sitting in your dorm throughout the day can cause you to be homesick and sad. Being out can help you meet new people, try new things and it makes the time go by very fast. As for when it comes to food at Iona.
Try to get a lot of food when using your meal swipe. Depending on the meal plan you have, you get a certain amount of meal swipes each week and it’s completely gut wrenching when you run out of them.
Keep track of the food you get. In college, especially at Iona. You have to stay on top of everything. As I said before, don’t let stuff catch you – whether it’s school work or food. Lastly, keep in touch with family and friends from home. It keeps you grounded and it’s nice to speak with people you’re comfortable and familiar with. These tips will make your first semester at college a very nice and easy process. Just know that it might be a world wind, but the end result is not that bad. Always see the positive.
