DreamWorks’s “Shrek” is one of not only the most beloved films of our early 2000’s childhoods, but one that still maintains and grows in its love and success even to this day. The story of “Shrek” is one that every kid, and now adult, is familiar with. The movie has provided some of the world’s most popular and iconic memes, songs, merchandise, and characters.
Its impact is so profound that in weeks, like this one, the film is rereleased in theaters for viewing. If you’re one of the 3 people on earth who has never had the chance to see “Shrek”, or you want to be reminded of an iconic story from your childhood, here’s the synopsis:
The story of “Shrek” follows three main characters: Shrek, a lone-wolf ogre living in a swamp that gets both love and friendship thrusted upon him, Donkey, Shrek’s involuntary talking donkey best friend, and Fiona, a princess trapped in the highest tower of the highest building looking to be rescued and to have her curse of turning into an Ogre when the sun sets, lifted.
The king of the land, Lord Farquaad, is looking for a wife, and Fiona catches his eye. Instead of rescuing her from the tower himself, he sends Shrek and Donkey. The two learn to love each other on their journey to rescue Fiona, and when Fiona joins their trio, the three of them become inseparable, with Shrek and Fiona starting to fall in love with each other.
With Fiora’s curse still being a secret from them, and Shrek unsure of how to deal with his feelings for Fiona, Shrek sends her away from him to the king to be married like the original plan said. Moments before the wedding, Donkey is able to convince Shrek to stop the wedding and reveal his feelings for Fiona. As he does, her ogre nature is revealed to him, and she learns to accept herself in this body that she once hated, and they live happily ever after.
This movie is filled with some of the best comedic moments and lines that you’ve probably heard or seen on social media. The voice acting in this animated film is beyond iconic and the story is timeless, even featuring many characters from childhood stories you were told growing up, like Pinocchio or the Three Blind Mice. Take this as your sign to rewatch Shrek and give yourself a laugh. Unleash your inner ogre.
