When we look back on our childhoods, there will always be a few extra special shows that we collectively look back on that remind us of the simpler times. Whether they were playing in the background when we were hanging out during the day, we watched with our friends or they were our favorite shows of all time, they’re familiar to us all.
One of these nostalgic shows was iCarly, which first aired on Nickelodeon in 2007. The show stayed renewed until 2012, and it was one of Nickelodeon’s most popular and successful of all time. Even if you didn’t watch iCarly every week like I did, you most likely remember the name or some funny moments from famous episodes, like “random dancing” or popular locations in the show like The Groovy Smoothie or the iCarly studio.
The show follows the story of three best friends, Carly, Sam and Freddy, as they create one of the world’s most popular web shows, iCarly. One of my favorite characters in the show, especially looking back on it as an adult, is Carly’s older brother Spencer.
As a kid, Spencer was the main comedic relief of the show, and I always loved seeing him on screen. However, as an adult who may or may not love to rewatch this show occasionally, Spencer’s character is relatable and funny in a way that I couldn’t see as a kid, especially with his wreck of a love life and his career path. While the main three will always be the heart of the show, Spencer should never be overlooked.
The distinct personalities of the main three characters are also what made the show so awesome to watch as a kid. Carly was the girly girl, straight A student, funny and pretty girl in school. That’s what made her best friend relationship with Sam, the juvie exposed, tom-boy tough girl so awesome. Although it was a friend dynamic that seemed like it would never work, this was one of the best parts of the show. The chemistry between the two made you want to watch them every week.
Then there’s Freddy, the tech-nerd sweetheart with an overbearing mother. When the three are in a room together in any scene, there was always some memorable or hilarious scene and never a boring minute of screen time. Whether it’s Sam making fun of Freddy, Freddy being so clearly in love with Carly or Carly taming Sam’s wild spirit, there was never a dull moment.
If this throwback corner has inspired you to rewatch iCarly, you won’t regret it. Reminiscing about your childhood is even better when the show is actually good, so give it a try!
