Throughout our hectic student lives, we should always remain aware of what is happening around us. In this column, I find some of the most significant events happening in the world around us and provide you with a small blurb and nitty-gritty details. Here are some of the major events that have been taking place:
Rep. Lauren Boebert causes disturbance at ‘Beetlejuice’ showing.
Last Sunday, Denver Congressional Representative Lauren Boebert was removed from a local showing of “Beetlejuice.” Surveillance video captured Boebert, and her supposed boyfriend, being escorted from the theater. Although the theater does not mention her name, they confirm the guests in the video were kicked out after audience members accused them of vaping, singing, using phones, and causing a disturbance. Boebert’s campaign manager acknowledged the incident but denies that she was vaping. The theater also confirmed that they innately refused to leave the venue after an employee threatened to call the police. Once an officer was on the way, the pair left the premise. Boebert claims she was removed due to her “animated personality.” However, a video captured shortly before their expulsion appears to show Boebert being fondled by her date. Boebert is a well-known critic of drag shows inciting “family values.” She has yet to offer a direct comment on her explicit behavior occurring at a family show.

Flooding in Libya.
Tropical Cyclone Daniel, otherwise known as Storm Daniel, is the deadliest and costliest cyclone in recorded history. Libya is among the most devasted. Floods swept through the city of Derna and have killed thousands. Derna was split into two after two dams were destroyed due to the heavy rain, cultivating a path to the city and destroying entire neighborhoods. Before the floods, the city had a population of around 100,000. The majority of the victims’ bodies remain in the water, requiring special equipment to retrieve them. Bodies are unrecognizable after a week in the water. According to the U.N., at least 11,300 people are dead and more than 10,100 are missing. Drinking water is contained due to flood water and dead bodies. The National Center for Disease Control has already detected at least 55 children poisoned due to drinking the water.

Jaahanvi Kandula.
A viral video of a police officer mocking the death of Jaahanvi Kandula has sparked a call for justice. Kandula was a 23-year-old graduate student at Northeastern University. She had moved from India to pursue a masters of engineering degree. Kandula was struck and killed by a different officer while she was crossing the street. Daniel Auderer, the officer in the video and vice president of Seattle Police Officers Guild, said that Kandula’s life “had limited value,” and appeared to be laughing. He incorrectly stated her age and proposed to “just write a check.” Protesters gathered on Thursday to where Kandula was killed. Indian officials and Indian-American leaders demand action from the Seattle police. Northeastern will present Kandula’s family with her master’s degree posthumously.
