Iona’s Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) held its first event of the spring semester – a screening of “Moonlight” directed by Barry Jenkins – on Feb. 7. The event was held at McGrath at 7 P.M. as part of the ongoing celebration of Black History Month at Iona. McGrath was filled with eager Gaels who were excited to watch the movie.

“Moonlight” is a coming-of-age film about Chiron, looking at three pivotal chapters of his life growing up as a Black gay man in Miami played by Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders and Alex Hibbert. The film is a vulnerable portrayal of acceptance and identity. ‘Moonlight’ was critically acclaimed, winning numerous awards including two Oscars.

After watching “Moonlight,” there was a discussion about the film’s themes. The purpose of the discussion was to illustrate the importance of intersectionality. Many commented about the excellent cinematography that reflected the emotional depth of growing up queer.

Jamie Sullivan, the president of QSA and avid film buff who gave “Moonlight” a four and half star rating on Letterboxd, expressed the club’s feelings towards the film.

JA: Why did you choose “Moonlight?”

JS: We chose “Moonlight” because we felt it offered such great representation for how it feels to fit with multiple marginalized groups and the impact it leaves on someone.

JA: What was a highlight of the film?

JS: The biggest highlight was during the movie, some of us offered up our own experiences and how we had felt what the main character Chiron feels.

JA: What was one important thing that came out of the discussion?

JS: With the discussion, the most important thing was talking about how it’s difficult to have two different identities that often clash with each other and the ways we can offer each other support through tough moments.

After a period of inactivity, the club will commence its general club meetings on Thursdays during activity hour at Doorley 112. QSA has many plans for the upcoming semester, so it is best to keep an eye out for updates.
