The New York Knicks are in the middle of another rebuilding season as they look to improve their record after the NBA All-Star break.

For the majority of games this season, the Knicks have been on the wrong side of the score column. They have scored over 5,800 points this season, while giving up a total of almost 6,200 points to their various opponents throughout the season. Opponents shoot an above average 38% from the three-point line against New York and convert more than half of their two-point attempts. This has led to the Knicks having the fourth most losses in the NBA this season.

They have recently traded one of their leading scorers, Marcus Morris, to the Clippers and acquired Maurice Harkless, a solid young defender who can help the Knicks through the second half of the season. However, trading Morris has left much of the scoring burden on the young Knicks core of RJ Barrett and Julius Randle. While Randle has had a career year with New York, with season averages of 19 points and ninerebounds, Barrett has had shooting struggles through the majority of the season thus far. Barrett is shooting 39% from the field and only 31% from three. Both are below the league average. However, Barrett is still a first-year player with plenty of room to grow and develop.

The constant losing has taken a toll on Knicks fans. In a January game against the Memphis Grizzlies, disgruntled Knicks supporters chanted “sell the team” during a timeout. These chants were directed at Knicks owner James Dolan, who has been reluctant to sell the franchise despite the constant unrest from the fans.

Since 2016, the Knicks have had five different coaches. None of those coaches have had a positive record during their time in New York. The most recent coaching change came earlier this season when coach David Fizdale was let go by the Knicks and replaced with Mike Miller. The Knicks have been searching for the right coach for the better part of the 2010s. Fizdale was a promising candidate, but the current Knicks squad is simply not enough to compete with Eastern Conference powerhouses such as the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers.

This season can still have a positive outcome for the Knicks. Having a negative record for the season will put them in position to secure a high draft pick in the upcoming 2020 NBA draft. Getting a higher pick in the draft will help New York gain young talent to build the team around.

The Knicks are currently sitting in 13th place in the Eastern Conference. With two months to go in the regular season, the playoffs are likely out of reach. The Knicks should utilize the remaining time in the season to develop their younger players and allow them to have meaningful playing time in games. Randle’s success this season has made him a trade target for teams looking for a power forward who can score and rebound, and the Knicks will have the opportunity to capitalize on that during the offseason. New York will have the chance to improve their team and their record next season by trading Randle for good draft picks or players, as well as acquiring a top pick in this year’s draft.
