Iona goes mobile with Gael Express and Zipcar

This year, Iona College introduces The Gael Express; the burgundy and gold vans that drive around campus providing free transportation for students between the Marriott Residence Inn, the Avalon East and New Rochelle Transportation Station, which is a short train ride away from Grand Central Station in New York City. All students are welcome to take the free shuttle service.

At the end of last semester many students were left confused about housing and transportation issues, but now their worries and doubts are in the past. The Gael Express runs every day for students. There is a map and schedule, which provide details about the shuttle service. Schedules are available all over campus.

Students living in the Marriott Residence Inn and Avalon East should take advantage of the shuttle bus service because it will help students get to class and back to their residences. Also, it will lighten the burden of students depending on cab services and having a car with increasing gas prices.

In addition to the shuttle service, there are two Zipcars available to rent on campus. There is a Honda Insight Hybrid and a Mazda 3.

Director of Off-Campus Housing Michelle Sampson and Residence Hall Director for Operations Melissa Pelletier said in a joint statement, “We researched this option to see if it would be beneficial for our campus. Off-Campus Housing and Residential Life thought this would be a great option for off-campus students to discourage them from bringing cars to campus.  As freshmen and sophomore resident students cannot bring cars to campus, we also thought Zipcar would give those students the opportunity to be mobile while still following the college
