Greek out with CGG’s John Petrullo

Petrullo on a trip to New Orleans.

Senior John Petrullo proclaims himself to be the “most interesting man in the world!” Petrullo’s undying love for the city of New Orleans, combined with his widespread campus involvement in organizations such as fraternity Delta Upsilon, the Council for Greek Governance (CGG) and Residential Life, certainly make Petrullo an interesting man on campus.

This year, Petrullo takes on the role of President of CGG in addition to his position as a Resident Assistant in Rice Hall. The Ionian chatted with Petrullo to learn more about his leadership roles and his love for New Orleans.

What do you do as the President of CGG?

My job as President can be described as diplomatic, as well as rewarding. I act as the liaison between Iona’s Fraternities and Sororities and the Office of Student Development. I monitor the organizations to make sure they are living up to the values and mission of CGG and Iona. I also conduct weekly meetings and serve on a variety of different campus-wide committees representing the Greek students.

What is your favorite part of being President of CGG?

I am able to lead some of the best organizations on this campus. What more can I ask for? I enjoy helping individuals and organizations succeed in our community, so one day they can do the same for others.

What are the goals and plans you have set for Greek Life this upcoming year?

This year we have decided to experiment with a new philanthropic idea. CGG is currently undergoing a search for a new philanthropy, so we came up with the idea to “sample” five different philanthropic organizations, ranging from Autism to Pediatric Aids. Our members will attend all of these events. At our end of the year finale, the council will announce our new philanthropy based on the feedback of our members.

Do you hope to make any changes or start any new initiatives in Greek Life?

We are currently working on expanding our community. Our vision is to have at least two more Greek letter organizations on this campus within the next year or two.

Why is CGG so important?

CGG is important because it promotes unity between Iona’s Fraternity and Sorority life community. We promote unity within our own small community as well as within the Iona College community.

What else should the student body know about Greek Life and CGG?

Fraternity and Sorority Life is a great way to get involved on campus. We not only provide a close-knit community, but a lifelong tie to our organizations and the college. We offer the best of both worlds, from social life to leadership development.

What is your favorite part of being an RA?

Being an RA allows me to promote a safe and fun community for residents. I can act as a mentor and help residents get involved and have a great experience at Iona. Being involved on campus will unleash an exciting new world and that is what I try to promote with my residents.

What are you looking forward to in your leadership positions of RA and CGG President?

I am looking forward to watching all the hard work and dedication play out within the year. I am trying new things and experimenting with different ideas. Success would be great, but failure can be an effective learning tool.

And finally, why do you love New Orleans so much?

I went there on a mission trip my sophomore year and I fell in love with the city, the culture, the music, the people—it was just awesome. New Orleans is this magical place that I cannot even describe and I encourage everyone to travel there one day!
