Sam Smith, the British up-and-coming musical sensation, graced the stage at the United Palace Theater recently in New York City with his amazing vocals.

As hundreds of excited fans piled through the doors of the magnificent theater it became clear that Smith is able to reach a wide variety of audiences. His emotionally charged ballads seemed to attract anyone and everyone as the theater filled up with a diverse group of fans.

Eventually the lights dimmed and screams filled the air. As the opening notes of his song “Nirvana” started blasting through the crowd Smith appeared on stage dressed in a classic black suit, armed with his undeniable vocal talent. The moment he started singing, the entire audience became visibly amazed by the talent he possessed.

As the crowd’s initial screams died down and a lone spot light showered him with light, Smith moved on to softer ballads such as his crowd-pleasing song “Leave Your Lover.”

Next, he introduced “I’m Not The Only One,” his fourth single from his debut studio album “In the Lonely Hour.” As the audience clapped along, this song truly showcased his vocal range and his ability to transition smoothly from high notes to low notes.

Smith’s sixth song was “Like I Can,” a slightly faster ballad that encouraged the audience to shout out the lyrics. As if his past songs did not make his talent obvious enough, he covered the late Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know,” which was received excitedly.

As the concert went on Smith introduced his emotionally-charged “Lay Me Down.” The mesmerized audience sang along to every single haunting word of the song.

He moved on to his faster ballad “Money On My Mind” for which he asked his audience to stand up. At this time Smith had the audience sing and dance along with him.

“Money On My Mind” was closely followed by a rendition CeCe Peniston’s “Finally,” which Smith executed beautifully. As screams filled the air he thanked his band and the audience and walked off stage.

Even as the lights dimmed the audience knew that the show was not over and started calling for an encore. Chanting filled the air as they pleaded for one more song in unison.

As Disclosure’s “Latch” filled the air the audience welcomed Smith back onto the stage. He performed the song in his unique soul-filled style and wowed listeners as he put his own twist on a popular song.

He followed “Latch” with his soft-yet-honest ballad “Make It To Me” which the audience happily sang back to him. His last song was his hit single “Stay With Me.” The audience clapped and sang along as Smith performed what is probably his break-through single.

Overall, Smith’s concert was like a love letter. He took his audience into his world and gave them a night filled with emotion and raw talent.
