The Gaels won half of their games on Aug. 30, defeating NJIT 3-1, but losing to Boston College 3-0.
In their first game against NJIT, they won four sets. Iona closed out winning 3 out of 4 of the sets with the scores being 25-21,24-26, 25-22, and 25-19.
Sophomore Taylor Timko and junior Buse Tinaz’s contributions were remarkable; they helped consistently keep the Gaels on track.
Moving onto the second game of the double header, Boston College took 3 in a best of 4 sets with the scores coming out to be 25-14, 25-19, and 25-16.
On the other hand, Timko has truly been putting the team on her back, alongside Jegers, both of whom led the game with 13 kills. However, Boston College still came out victorious mainly due to the efforts of Maretina Gonzalo Cortes, who tallied 12 kills, five blocks, and 16 digs.
Iona Volleyball hit the road over the weekend to face NJIT in a rematch that resulted in a 3-2 victory for the Gaels.
Both teams already had an idea of what was to come, so both teams are familiar and eager to see which squad is better.
During Iona’s first set, they trailed by three, losing momentum, but then recovered by scoring four consecutive points, thanks to a service ace by freshman Emma Koceja, which helped change things around for the Gaels. They then finished strong in the final set with a 4-1 lead. This helped set the tone, finishing off the final set 5-1.
Moving along to the second game of the doubleheader, Seton Hall defeated Iona 3-0, not allowing them to capture a single win. Seton Hall clearly showed who was the more dominant team by creating more opportunities for their teammates to score.
