A look at Iona’s fashion culture

Every student has their own unique sense of style. No one person is exactly the same and many students at Iona choose to express themselves through their clothing and accessories. Clubs, such as the Iona College Fashion Club, provide an outlet that gives students who love fashion a place to discuss their interests.

At Iona, new trends and styles can be seen every day. This photo spread by Alex Galbreath showcases the diverse style that pervades the college campus. Even cooler — junior Justin Henry styled the looks in the photos shown.

This fall, athletic wear and style is making a comeback in all aspects of the fashion industry. Popular in the 1980s and then again in the early 2000s, the sportswear trend has shown that it won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Track pants mixed with couture tops was a pervasive trend during New York Fashion Week, along with stripes and loose linen. The mixing of patterns and fabrics, which is often seen as taboo, has also received a revival in the fashion world.

Faux fur and vibrant neon colors also stole the spotlight during NYFW. Don’t be surprised if you see some of these trends across campus throughout the spring as we move into fall. These newly awoken statement looks will create an interesting fashion dynamic for the summer. Be on the lookout for bright swimsuits!

Paul Smith’s menswear collection took the week by storm, featuring a mix of urban athletic garb and the sleek, patterned three-piece suits he is so famous for. Celebrities including Niall Horan have popularized the more affordable brand by creating custom suits of their own, which were in display during NYFW. However, celebrities aren’t the only ones who can make headlines with their unique style. Iona has its fair share of fashion icons all across campus.

College can be the best time to discover yourself and your own look, so don’t be afraid to experiment and figure out what makes you feel the most empowered. Dress to empower and motivate yourself, not for anyone else.
