The popular boyband 5 Seconds of Summer returned to the music scene with not only a new single, but a new sound, on Feb. 23.

The Australian pop rock band released a new single after a two-year hiatus. It was originally announced that an album was coming out in 2017 while the band continued their “Sounds Live Feels Live” tour, but it ultimately led to radio silence.

Talk of new music started around November of last year when guitarist Michael Clifford tweeted about the new album. Clifford also spoke to Billboard in December about what is to come.

“I think the reason it has taken so long is because we haven’t just wanted to get it to a place where we’re, like, happy…,” Clifford said in the Dec. 23 Billboard.com article. “We want it to be perfect. I think when all the new stuff comes out, it’s like a departure of our old sound but it still keeps elements of all of the things we liked about it. It was just time for us to change.”

“Want You Back” was finally released after the band shared behind the scenes photos, snippets of the song and heartfelt letters from the band to their fans.

While the song is similar to the band’s signature pop rock sound, it is slightly turned down and more on the pop side. “Want You Back” is very reminiscent of the songs from Maroon 5’s 2007 album “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.”

The new sound is a noticeable change, but change can be a good thing. Sticking to the normal routine of things can become boring. Without change you cannot grow as a person, or in this case, as an artist.

The band is excited to start this new journey. In an interview with Radio.com, bassist Calum Hood said writing “Want You Back” was fairly easy.

“It was quite an organic procedure writing it, the process wasn’t strenuous; it was very free flowing,” Hood said in the article.

Ashton Irwin chimed in stating, “This era of 5 Seconds of Summer feels like the first era to us, which is amazing.”

It is unknown when their third album will be released, but it was recently announced that they will be touring throughout the month of April.

“Want You Back” is a very good song that is worth checking out. Music fan opinion in a review should not be “it was very good.”
