The real side of skincare: Can you afford to take care of your face in college?

La Roche-Posay is more expensive, but may be more effective depending on your skin type.

Skincare is something that not everybody takes part in but is actually very important to your overall appearance. Having clear, healthy skin makes you look healthier and can make makeup application much easier. Most products can be too expensive for a college student’s budget, and not everybody wants to pay a lot of money to have great skin. Here is an affordable skin care routine that works for most skin types.

1. If you wear makeup, you need to remove your makeup before washing your face at the end of the day. It’s not enough to remove your makeup and call it a night if you want to avoid break outs. An easy, affordable makeup removing wipe is the Neutrogena Makeup Removing Towelettes. These wipes remove all of the product with one wipe. It also comes in several different varieties such as “fragrance free” and “sensitive skin.” These wipes are only $6.79 for 25 wipes and can be found in your local drugstore.

2. The next step toward clear, healthy skin is a good facial cleanser. A gentle facial wash that’s optimal for sensitive skin is the Cetaphil Daily Facial Wash. This is only $6.39 and has simple ingredients, so it works for all skin types. Plus, it is gentle enough to use every day. A good tip is to dry your face off in patting motions—never rub—with a dry cotton face towel. This improves the elasticity of the skin, preventing wrinkles in the future. If you’re looking for a stronger cleanser, try the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel Cleanser. Even though it’s a little more expensive at $14 to $15, it is great for clogged pores or gritty feeling skin. It’s definitely worth the splurge if you wear makeup daily!

3. Some people would stop at the cleanser for their skincare routine. However, a toner or an astringent can help restore balance to your skin, preventing it from becoming too dry or too oily the next day. An affordable, excellent toner is Thayer’s Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel for $8.79. This helps with shrinking the appearance of pores, without drying out your skin. Any product with witch hazel helps with mattifying and minimizing the look of pores.

If you break out often, try the SeaBreeze Astringent. It is only $4 at Walmart, or you can order a set of three from amazon for $11. This astringent is a little more powerful and should only be used every other day. Try dabbing some on to your problem areas, and you’ll have clearer skin the next day!

4. The last step in this routine is moisturizing. Whether you have dry, oily or combination skin, moisturizing is a very important and essential step in skincare. Make sure you are moisturizing both before bed and when you wake up in the morning to keep your skin balanced and healthy. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is a long-lasting sensitive skin moisturizer that is also affordable. You can even get a version with SPF to protect yourself from UV rays. This gentle product works for all skin types and is available in your local drugstore for $12.99.

You may not be able to afford the expensive, high-end products that celebrities are endorsing on their Instagram, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find great affordable products that work for you. Don’t sacrifice your skin for the sake of saving that extra buck, but you don’t have to break the bank either to get great, healthy skin. Try samples at your local Ulta or Sephora to find what best works for you!
