‘A Legendary Christmas’ brings jazz, R&B to classics

Christmas albums are largely dismissed by mainstream audiences, considering most songs rehash the same old concepts over and over again. By design, Christmas albums meld the feeling of sappy nostalgia with exciting new trends, which end up playing in elevators and dentists’ offices years later.

For anyone who cares about pop culture, albums like these do not deserve to be ignored, as they constitute their own unique musical style.

This year, make sure you have room in your stocking for “A Legendary Christmas,” a new Christmas album by American singer John Legend.

This 14-track album puts forth a lovingly balanced stream of traditional tunes and soul-warming Christmas spirit back into the air. Unapologetically, the singer-songwriter finds a way to bring urban music sensibility even to a Christmas song as quintessentially cookie-cutter as “Silver Bells.”

Some of the songs feel more like embellished riffing than future holiday classics, yet they are all filled with Christmas cheer, which is a good thing for the holidays. The album features other amazing artists such as Esperanza Spalding and Stevie Wonder.

Legend released “A Legendary Christmas” on Oct. 26 and will be promoting the album by a tour of the same name from November to December. It is an album that will go down in history as the champion of Christmas 2018. It seamlessly blends John’s love for jazz, R&B and pop music.

Christmas itself digs up everybody’s sentimental feelings and puts them on display. “A Legendary Christmas” taps into nostalgia while offering a fun musicality not usually found in a regular Christmas album, making it an album that you should check out this holiday season.
